Fonally, he stopped bleeding and the doctor finished sewing up the wound. "I'll cauterize it now," the medic said. He took a hot rod which his assistant had roughy in early and lightly pressed it against the wound, searing the skin but also closing it. He continued this way until the skin was red and angry, but sealed. Wren grit her teeth and continued to hold his hand.

At the first touch of the iron, Rylan snapped away and started screaming, his hand clenching tight around Wren's.

Wren murmured to Rylan, comforting sounds. "Shh, shh. It's okay. I'm here."

Once it was over, Rylan's body went limp again as he lost consciousness. A sheen of sweat broke out over his body.

Wren helped the medic put Rylan into his bed. She then pulled an embroidered chair up to his bedside and sat beside him.

Rylan didn't wake for almost twenty four hours. When he did, he was still a little delirious. "Wren?" he murmured.

She was asleep, but only lightly, and so when he awoke, she did as well. "Yes, Rylan. I'm here."

Rylan blinked at her, unsure if she was actually there or if he was hallucinating. "You stayed."

"I couldn't bear to be away, not knowing," she whispered. "Do you feel any better?"

Rylan let out a hoarse laugh. "As good as I can feel after being stabbed," he said.

Wren chuckled. "I suppose that's a good enough answer as any."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"What about everyone else?" Rylan asked. "Was anyone else hurt? Were there any casualties?"

[~echo~]

Wren shook her head. "No, no one. I had to fight one off, but mostly they were trying to scare us and get at you."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Rylan let out a breath of relief. "Good. I can rest easy now."

Wren smiled faintly. "I'm glad," she murmured.

"Mmm," Rylan groaned. "I could use some food. What time is it anyway?"

[~echo~]

Wren chewed her lip nervously, still afraid he would relapse and die. "About four in the afternoon. I'll go get you something to eat."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"Thank you, Wren," he said. He closed his eyes, but he was clearly still conscious, just resting.

She hesitated for a moment before rushing downstairs and grabbing the tray she had asked to be prepared earlier. She quickly returned with it. "Here you are." On the tray was a slice of good, hearty bread and a bowl of thick stew. Next to these was a wooden cup full of water.

Rylan opened his eyes and reached weakly for the food. He grabbed the bread first. His hand shook as he brought it to his lips, but he took a bit and chewed and swallowed.
