Guess Then...I Kinda Got Arrested

Kendrick took the waterbottle but he looked to Astrid before drinking, trying to read her emotions.

Astrid screwed the top off the bottle absently, but didn't take a drink. All this felt very surreal. She'd lived a fast-paced, drug-and-alcohol-filled life, but this was... different. Being bailed out by a stranger who told them some mysterious organization was going to come after them. What a day.

Kendrick also unscrewed the bottle cap but he also didn't drink. He waited for something to happen, it felt like his life was in a freeze frame.

Astrid's eyes cleared a little and focused on Jonathan. "So, what now?"

"Now I figure out what to do about ANEW to get them off your trail," he said. "Then you can go home."

Astrid snorted. "Right. Home."

Kendrick actually cackled a little bit. "Home." He snorted. "ANEW might be better."

Jonathan gave him a flat look. "You'd be better of dead than with them," he said. "If they decide to keep you alive, that is." He glanced between them, noting that neither had taken a drink, and said, "I take it you two are both orphans."

Kendrick cocked an eyebrow, screwed the cap back no his water bottle and set it back down. "Now why would you say that?"

Jonathan shrugged. "I can see it. Either your parents are dead, or they might as well be," he said. "People get this... look in their eyes." He'd know; he'd seen it in the mirror.

Kendrick crossed his arms and glared at Jonathan. "Can we just move on with whatever your plan is."

Jonathan sighed. "I don't have a plan, really. At least not one that involves either of you. You two are going to stay here. Lay low."

"Wait, you expect us to just hang out?" Astrid demanded. "At your creepy shack?"

"You don't have a plan and you want us to stay here? You're freaking mental." Kendrick huffed and made for the door. "Unbelievable," he grumbled.

Jonathan's eyes hardened and he gestured toward the front of the house. "There's the door," he said. "Feel free to leave. I doubt you'll get very far, but good luck." Then he turned and left the kitchen, disappearing down a hallway.

Astrid blew out a breath. "Lovely."

Kendrick stood staring at the front door for a long time. He stood, feet shoulder width apart, arms crossed, and he did not move. A minute passed. An hour. Maybe more.

Astrid stood with him for a long time before wandering into the next room and finding a couch to sit on. There was no TV and she didn't see any books laying around, so she ended up just sitting there.

Finally Kendrick turned away from the door and sought out Andrew. "Give me a reason to trust you."

Kendrick moved away from the door and sat next to Astrid. "Do you suppose we should look for food?"

"I don't know," she murmured. "Are you hungry?" She still hadn't opened the water bottle in her hand.

"Kind of. But i'm still skeptical. And nervous."

"Tell me about it," Astrid said. "But he hasn't kill us yet, so that's good. I don't think he means us any harm, but I'm worried he's not all there.
