Demons come in all different shapes and sizes, but they are all evil. They are only kept at bay by the powerful Protectors, who they despise. They will take any chance they get to kill a Protector. All demons are shape-shifters, and can take whatever form they want, expect for humans. They have a human form (what they looked like as a human), to help them blend in, but that's it. They're also all incredibly strong and fast while on Earth. When they are 'killed' by a Protector, they are only returned to their home dimension--what humans would call "Hell," but rather than a place underground it's a whole different dimension. To get to the human dimension, demons have to open a portal, which is never easy to do between dimensions. They can use the portals to travel quickly from one location to another inside the same dimension, giving them the ability to teleport, in a way. Lesser demons find it easiest to open a portal to the human world. All demons were once human but had their "humanity burned away in Hell," even Greater Demons, who are really just very, very old demons. The only way for a Greater Demon to get to Earth is for one of their minions to have a human sacrifice of evil and corrupt humans. The flow of energy from Earth to Hell allows the Greater Demon to open a portal.
