The καταφύγιο is a sanctuary for mutants. "καταφύγιο" means refuge in Greek, and that's just what it is. While Mutant High talks of peace between humans and mutants and the Brotherhood fight for respect, the καταφύγιο simply hide from the human world, and much of the mutant world. Much of their focus is rescuing mutants taken prisoner by the mutant control, but they will help out other mutants on the street, when they can find them. No human knows the καταφύγιο exists, not even as a rumor. They prefer to keep it that way. They live in harmony in an underground city, which is big enough that you'd think someone would find it, but no one has. Their main purpose is to help shunned mutants and, above all else, remain a secret. If they were discovered by humans, nothing would ever be the same for them.

Leonardo Rosano (Leo)

A drop-dead hot 20 year old guy with spikey dark blonde hair and deep green eyes. He can be charming at times, and yet extremely irritating at the same time. He usually has a careless attitude and likes to wear that infurating smirk. When he's angry, he becomes tense an reserved. Of course, he's always reserved, but he becomes even more so. He's one of those people who doesn't let other people see his emotions like fear or sadness. He often resorts to anger than to show what he's really feeling. Despite this, people trust him, and look up to him. He's a powerful fighter, after years of training and struggling for survival. You don't want to be on his bad side. He discovered the Refuge on his own, one of the very few people to do so. Though he is a leader, he still acts as a scout and brings mutants down from the Upperground. Leo's parents were killed when he was 10, but he won't share that information with many people, and often pretends like he doesn't care. He was seperated from his brother and sister, Amadeo and Arianna, when they arrived in America. Mutant Control showed up at the airport and captured him, but he escaped only a few days later. In the years before finding the Refuge, he befriended the Masons and Carter's ex-girlfriend, Nicole. Leo does not meddle in the realm of love. He hadn't had a real girlfriend for a very long time, and though he flirts and makes suggestive comments, things don't happen very often. Of course, he was raised to be a gentleman, the first few years that he was with his family. He usually shows this side to newcomers, to make them feel at home. Despite all his shortcomings, he's really a good guy. He's just afraid to care and to be cared about. His power is that he can change the way people perceive things, which in itself has endless possibilities. His power includes things that people see, feel, hear, smell, taste, and their emotions. Clare Edwards

A stunning 17 year old girl girl with sleek black hair and dark blue eyes. In highschoolS, she was the "popular girl" at her school, who had dated all the jocks. She used to act like a typical girly girl teenager, with her makeup and designer clothes, but since she met Conner she's changed. She realized there's a bit more to life than wonder what you're going to wear to the next party. Just about the only thing about her old personality that she's retained is her bad-a** attitude. Clare isn't afraid of anything, or at least she tries to act that way. She was never above kneeing some guy in the groin if he pissed her off, and still isn't. Her full name is Clarissa. Her power is to enhance emotions, whether make them lesser or more. She can't change what you feel, only how strongly you feel about it. She was Conner's girlfriend for awhile, but eventually he broke her heart by running back to his ex. She'll never admit it because she's too proud for that, but she feels like Conner changed her life. Before him, she was just another b***** girl with an attitude problem. She was normal, or at least trying desperately to pretend she was. It wasn't until she met him that she realized she didn't want to be normal. Maybe sometimes she even felt he was her whole life, but she didn't want him to be. She didn't want to be one of those clingy girlfriends. She isn't sure where she stands now they they're not together. Right now, though, one thing's for certain: she won't be the sucker type to just stay friends with the ex. Especially not when she's still in love with him. She never told her parents she was a mutant, but Mutant Control informed them after she went missing. She isn't sure she'll ever be able to go back home now. When Leonardo found out Mutant Control was looking for her, he came and 'rescued' her--though it was really more like a kidnapping--and brought her to the Refuge. Phoenix Holiday

Persecuted and put down since she was a little girl, Phoenix Holiday is a fragile soul. This cornsilk blonde has lived in poverty all her life, bouncing from place to place with deadbeat parents. Phoenix never grew up in a stable enviornment. Violence was always a looming prescence in the young mutant's childhood. She witnessed fights, robbings, even murder. In her hazel eyes, it was life at its simplest. Phoenix began showing signs of being a mutant when she was five years old. She was begging for food, as she often did because her parents barely made enough money to live on, when an older man tried to hurt her. In her fear and desperation, Phoenix harnessed fire- the one substance she knew could injure- out of thin air. She burned the man, quite awfully actually. Phoenix, horrified, never informed her parents of this event, instead locking the secret inside of her. Her fiery outbursts only occured when Phoenix was angry or frightened, however, the mutant began to harness her power. She could produce the fire when she wanted to, but the level of her power was still very high. She attended school with normal children, however, she was ostracized because of her "poor" clothing and lack of money. Phoenix never fit in with humans.
