Their little cottage had become even cozier as time went on. Tama Godrick no longer looked like a stately princess. She wore simpler clothes, dresses with little color and no jewels. Her thick brown hair was worn in a simple braid most of the time because it was easier to work with it that way. She didn't regret leaving Essetir. No, her and Jack had a good life here. She was finally happy.
The day was cloudy and grey and Tama was feeling under the weather from the moment she woke up. She rolled over in bed and sighed, rubbing a hand against her forehead. Jack wasn't in bed beside her. Perhaps he'd already left for work.
Jack was just outside, tacking his old horse to ride to work. He looked tired but relatively happy. This type of life suited him just fine. He went back inside for something to eat on the road into the city and saw that Tama was awake. He strode over to her and gently kissed her on the forehead. "How are you, my love?"
Tama shifted up into a sitting position and kissed his chin lightly, "Just a little under the weather. Probably because it looks to be a cloudy, unhappy day. I'm sure it'll pass."
Jack nodded and rushed outside. He drew water from the deep well he had dug for Tama, and then brought the bucket inside where he put it into another bucket. He put some water in a pewter cup and handed it to her. "Here. Do you want me to stay home with you today?"
Jack hesitated but finally nodded. "You know I worry. But I trust you. Be safe." He kissed her forehead and then ran out the door. He mounted his horse and swiftly galloped away.
Tama rose, sipping her water as she crossed to the window to watch him ride away. Jack was a good man, he always had been. She was touched by his concern, though reluctant to allow him to be consumed by it. Her day would go on as usual, sickness or no sickness.

Fortunately for Tama, the nausea did pass and she felt relatively fine as the day went on. She'd changed out of her nightclothes and prepared a lunch for herself. After that, she cleaned up the cottage. At first, it had taken her a while to learn because she used to have servants to clean for her. But now that she knew how, Tama found it therapeutic. Rarely did anyone ever come by, so when Tama heard the clunk of hooves, she peered out the window with narrowed golden eyes.
Jack returned to the cottage after a boring day of pacing the walls of the castle. He returned precisely at six thirty. He kissed Tama when he came in from caring for his horse, then smiled at her. "How are you? Are you feeling better? I brought you something." He dropped a small brown packet into her hand. "Some seeds," he explained, "so you can start a garden. It'll be better than going to the market."
Tama smiled and stroked his cheek light,y "I'm feeling much better, thank you." She plucked up the seeds and inspected them, "Seeds for what? Vegetables?"
"I saw men on horseback go by today," Tama sounded a little worried as she laid her head on his shoulder, "Theu didn't stop, but they were looking at the house.."
Jack thought for a moment. "Draw the curtains facing the road whenever you can tomorrow," he said softly. He hugged her. "I couldn't bear to lose you."
