Cassius lay still, unable to sleep. Something was wrong with him. The room was too empty and lonely. And it was spreading to the rest of the world.

The ride back to the palace was fairly uneventful, though Averyl kept casting worried looks at Cassius. He wasn't fully recovered, and still looked a little pale, but the old man had deemed him fit enough to return. She was worried he'd fall out of the saddle, though. She rode close to him, in case something happened. Really, she wasn't sure what she'd do, but she felt better being at his side.

The horse felt like home to Cassius and he let his limp body move with the self-certain stride of the horse. The only thing that was really out of place to him was the lady, riding next to him, too close, she was caring too much and he couldn't put his thumb on why this bothered him.

When they reached the palace, they left their horses with the stablehands and hurried through the corridors to reach the room where the prisoner was being held.

Cassius closed his eyes and took a deep breath before he entered. He felt an unknown strength wash up into him. When he opened his eyes he was new.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Averyl entered the room behind him, followed by four guards. From the corner of the room, the man looked up. He'd only been there for three days, but his eyes were tired and he looked gaunt. But that didn't prevent him from looking defiant.

"You're still strong. Good. Maybe you won't break too quickly." Cassius approached the man with sure footed steps.
"You should be dead." The man hissed.
"Unfortunately for you I have people who want me alive."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Averyl stood in the corner, two of her guards flanking her. The other two stood near Cassius, in case anything happened.

Cassius cocked his head and watched the man thoughtfully for a moment, then pulled a small blade out of the waistband of his pants. It wasn't a threatening blade to be sure, too tiny, too dainty looking. But it was the sharpest blade Cassius had ever encountered and he knew from experience it was a horrible pain when it sliced you.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Averyl closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. Did she really want to watch this?

Cassius walked around behind the man and pressed the blade to the back of his neck. The man let out a horrific sound, although not a scream.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Averyl sucked in a sharp breath and the guard on her left put a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay, my Lady?" he asked quietly. She gave a small nod, but she wasn't sure it was the truth.

It kept going, getting progressively worse and worse. Finally they had an answer and when the man spoke, Cassius looked up directly at Averyl. He knew he shouldn't have, he knew he did not look like himself, but he wanted to see her face when she heard the name.

(Do we have an idea for this? I was thinking the attackers could work for someone Averyl knows, maybe someone who wants to take over her position. Because, you know, that's what rich people in this world do. Lol)

"Geoffrey Karstark," the man gasped. Averyl stiffened, her eyes going wide. "No," she whispered. She shook her head slowly. "No," she said again, and then fled the room.
