Cael Holland slid around the corner, his ears straining and his finger resting just shy of his trigger. What was that? And where had the rest of his team gone? He stepped over a pile of rubble and then skirted around some broken glass that had come from the nearby shattered window. He'd seen some pretty bad neighborhoods, but this place was beyond wrecked. It was a miracle any of the buildings were still standing.
When a roar sounded behind him, he whirled around and raised his gun, ready to shoot whatever was there. Only, there wasn't anything there. "What the hell?" he muttered. He could have sworn that sound had come from just behind him. Either this thing was invisible, ridiculously fast... or its roar was just that loud. He crept along the street, moving like a soldier in an area full of enemies. Silence fell over the street again, but Cael knew it wasn't over.
Thud, thud, thud. Cael froze, his eyes narrowing. Thud, thud, thud. It sounded like footsteps, but from something incredibly large. A shadow moved as something rounded the corner, and Cael threw himself through an open doorway to hide. Peering out, he saw the most grotesque creature he'd encountered yet. "Holy shit," he whispered. A scagdead, he thought. What were the odds that one of these would arise from the virus? One in a thousand? He knew one thing, though: he didn't want to face this monstrosity on his own. While the creature was looking in the other direction, he sprang from his hiding place and open fired on the thing, hoping to at least injure it. The thing roared--and yeah, it was that loud--but Cael was already sprinting down the street, not looking back.
