The forest was peaceful, almost quiet. The small breeze ruffled the leaves in the trees, birds twittered to themselves. A few clouds covered the sun, leaving the small clearing darker than usual. A camp seemed to be set up there- a small lean-to, only big enough for one man to fit in. The blackened remains of a fire still smoldered, a thin ribbon of smoke rising up into the air.
The silence was broken by the whirring of wings. Huge wings, ones that might have belonged to some ancient, giant feathered creature. But no bird lighted on the campsite- no, it was a boy. He was tall and lanky with deep brown eyes and messy blonde hair. He sported a pair of fawn-colored wings. Wait, what? The boy folded them on his back and sat down at the fire, putting some more small twigs in the embers. He gently coaxed it back to life, until it was hot enough to cook on. He grabbed a blackened stake, thin in diameter, that had been cooked with before. The boy poked a small rodent-looking creature on the stick and held it over the fire, almost in the flames.
Her voice changed. It became low, deep, like she couldn't stand to have her sword taken. "This is.. This is a part of my soul. Literally. They - the scientists - fashioned it from part of my heart. If I do not have it on me, somehow, I die slowly."
Elena sighed, sitting with her legs crossed Indian style. "Daragon is an alternate universe. It is similar to Earth but stronger, with more resources. It is inside of Earth, like the core."
She nodded. "Yes. There was once a famous explorer who came to Daragon and published a book there about it. It was named Journey to the Center of the Earth."
