The young girl stood staring at the looking glass hanging on her bedroom door.
It was a completely normal mirror, with little to call to memory about. It had a simple wooden frame and smudged glass, having not been cleaned in a while. Years of finger marks do take their toll, you know, and the little girl was known to be a bit messy. All the same, the mirror seemed to have something strange about it, a sort of energy that felt unnatural. The little girl gently took a lock of her golden hair and stroked it, studying the mirror with her large, innocent brown eyes.
Suddenly and without warning, the mirror shook. It was only a small shake, not enough to be alarmed about but all the same unnerving. Every normal person knew that mirrors didn't just shake on their own. The little girl's eyebrows furrowed and she reached out a short index finger, gingerly touching the surface of the glass. Only she didn't feel any glass beneath her skin. Instead, she felt the sensation of a breeze and nothing else below her finger. She blinked again and stepped closer, now putting out her whole hand. In the place of the cool, hard surface, she felt the small prick of what felt like a pinecone.
She stepped even closer and... through the looking glass.
Instantly, the little girl felt a falling sensation and shut her eyes in fear. But the jolt of falling on the ground didn't come. Instead, she hovered over the pine needle-covered ground. A moment later, she was dropped gently onto her feet and she looked around. She was now in a completely unfamiliar setting. It was a pine forest, ripe with the smell of sap. She started walking- she didn't know where. After a while, she came to a large lake and heard the sound of horse hooves....
