She stayed limp over his shoulders, the sounds of wailing sirens fading in the distance

Jermon wove through the woods, heading toward the city he knew was only a few miles away. He'd been there many times since arriving at ANEW, but never by foot. They always drove. This would be the longest few miles of his life. He was panting before long, his muscles aching and his chest not quite having the strength to get enough air into his lungs. He had to stop and rest, so he set her down gently on the forest floor, her back against a tree.

After a little while of laying down she let out a small sound of pain, her eyes fluttering open.

Jermon scrambled to kneel down beside her. "Hey. Are you okay?"

She gazed at him and nodded, "are you?" She asked worriedly.

"I'm more worried about you," he said. "You... you have blood on your face."

She touched her nose where blood was seeping out,"oh, im fine"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"You don't look fine," Jermon said. "We should rest here for a bit."

She nodded,"okay, But we shouldn't stay too long, we need to stay ahead of them"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Jermon nodded wearily. "I just... I need a rest... Then we can go."

She nodded and ushered him to sit down.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Jermon took a seat beside her and leaned his head against the tree. "I've tried this before, you know. Escaping. Never from the compound, though. I'd always try to flee when out on a mission. I never had the resources to escape from the actual building."

She blinked,"I've never been outside before" she said with a smile, gazing up at the evening sky.

"Never?" Jermon said. "How long have you been a captive at ANEW?"

She looked at her hands and began counting on her fingers,"well I'm 20 years old so a little over 15 years" she said.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"Fifteen years," Jermon murmured. He'd only been stuck there for about nine. Still, it was a long time, and to not see the sun for fifteen years? "How did you live?"

She shrugged,"I was five, I dont even really remember what this is all like" she said,"all I know is what they told me"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"And what did they tell you?" he asked, a tinge of bitterness entering his voice.

"They said it was bad, that there were thingngs that wanted to kill me out here" she said, a smile pricking her rosy lips. The moon shining in her eyes.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"That may be true," Jermon said. "But freedom is worth the danger."
