Ajax was sitting at the front desk of the lobby in the dorm in which he lived and served as an RA. On a normal day, one or two people would enter--sometimes bringing a guest, sometimes not--after a sleepover or one-night stand the night before. It allowed him to work on his college assignments, the articles for his internship at the local newspaper, or updating his popular internet blog.
However, today, today was different.
Ajax rested his head in his hand, lightly tapping his totem ring against the plywood counter that served as a wall between himself and the people entering the lobby in order to stay awake. He'd went to another frat party last night in an attempt to break the weird occurrences at the college parties in an attempt to get his first by-line. Debating whether to skip his first class, he considered going back up to his dorm and taking a nap. He let his eyes close, listening for the buzz of the door to announce another person had entered the building.
Screech. The sound of someone going way too fast and stopping way too fast could be heard coming from the road in front of the dormitory--not an odd sound at an institution filled with inexperienced drivers. He was starting to drift into sleep a few seconds later when the real excitement started.
BAM! BAM! BAM! He looked up annoyed at the persistence of a freshman that probably forgot his key-card for the umpteenth time this semester trying to get his attention. His eyes widened in terror. He stumbled out of his seat, pressing the open button to let the disheveled woman enter, before pressing the emergency button to alert the police to send help immediately.
He jumped over the counter and headed over to the young woman that had landed face down in a growing pool of her own blood. He turned her over, prepared to use his magic to slow the bleeding some, but it was too late. No breathing. No pulse. No life magic.
Stumbling back, he didn't realize how far away he got from the body until he hit the desk he'd occupied moments earlier. Who the hell could have done that to this woman?
Chunks were cut out of her face and had cloth patches sewed in their place--one having torn off to allow him to see the damage. Blood poured from her mouth. His heart pounded and he placed his bloodied hands over his eyes to make him look away from the woman. Please let the cops hurry...
He heard the elevator doors announce its arrival at the lobby. Oh, no! No one else needed to witness this horrific scene.
