"Exactly my point. Which is why..." He took a deep breath and showed her the key in his hand. "Lanna, we've known each other forever now, as friends. Do you think...we could be more than that?" He was quiet for a moment, before he hurriedly continued, "The key- this is to a house Sven's lending me; I won it at a match we had."
Alanna looked surprised, examining the key in his hand. "Oh, Bo," she said quietly. "I'm just not sure that... I'm not sure if we can move forward so quickly. I really do like you, don't get me wrong! But we need to get to know each other more. It's been years since I've seen you... we hardly know each other anymore."
Instead of annoyance or embarrassment, pain flickered across his face. "Are you sure? Are you absolutely sure that you can't be with me? Lanna, we've known each other for years. Sure we haven't seen each other, though we've known each other." He was quiet for a few moments, before he continued, "The caravan's leaving tomorrow. I have no idea when I'll be back or if I will."
Alanna looked sadly at the ground. "I can't just uproot my life, Bo.. I... I need time to think. Please... I'll consider your offer, but we need to see each other more. You can leave the caravan. I did!"
"Lanna, I can't just leave the group just because of a 'maybe.' What if you decide you don't want to be with me? What will I do?" He looked so distressed, having been shot down.
Alanna looked up at him. "Then don't leave. I don't expect you to leave for me. But if you want this to go somewhere, we have to interact more. I can't marry someone I only met for the first one in years yesterday."
"There's really nothing so simple with you, is there?" He asked wearily, letting out a sigh. His hand dropped the key in his pocket, frowning. "Let's at least have the picnic, OK?" Bo finally continued, having been quiet for a couple moments.
Bo brushed his hands on his legs, the frown still intact. "So...er," he said, breaking the large silence. It had been awkward between the two during the small picnic; what was supposed to be a nice meal turned out to be a awkward and strained.
