He looked taken aback, as his eyebrows pinched together. "Er...what about your friends? They didn't seem to be taken to me," Jerald said, blinking back up at her.
He stared at her, not in disgust, but in quiet contemplation. "I will have to take a reign check, my mother...she..." His voice drew quieter, not really knowing how to explain it, without sounding like a wackjob.
"Well, let me at least give you my number," she said. She took out a small piece of paper and scribbled a number on it. "Here. Text me and let me know."
He watched her scribble her number down with bugged out eyes. "Uh...s-sure," he finally said, hesitantly taking her number and shoving in his pocket. He scribbled his number down on a piece of crumpled up paper, before hesitantly handing it to her.
It was Wednesday, two days after Catrin's accident and she was at school with her ankle taped up with gauze on it. She was still waiting to hear back from Jared about her date proposal and she was beginning to lose hope. She walked into her first period class, a class they shared, and sat in her usual spot.
He had wanted to text her, he really did, but something...something held him back. It was difficult to explain. Jareld didn't feel nervous in texting her, he just felt...well, awkward.
He was already sitting in the classroom, an earbud popped into his ear, as he tapped his finger in tempo. He stared out the window with a fist against his heek, not really looking at anything.
Catrin looked at him curiously, then went to sit next to him. Class wasn't starting yet so they had time to talk. "Hi," she said. "So, any word yet? Are you free on Friday?"
He jumped as he heard her voice and turned around, his earbud almost popping out. "Oh, er... Hi Catrin," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Um...ah, yeah. I think...I am."
The days seemed to blur together, what with Jerald's constantly practicing and school bogging him down. And soon, it was Friday. He was more apprehensive about this endeavor, than excited. After all, what were you supposed to say to someone you hadn't spoken to in years...? To calm himself down, Jerald had locked himself up in the music room.
