The main character, male, is a lonely business man who has estranged himself from the rest of his family because of his obsession with work. Due to this obsession, anyone he comes in contact with doesn't want to spend longer than one night with him, and even then if they do it's just because of his money. One day, when he goes to visit his brother, who is a mad scientist, he comes up with an insane idea: To have his brother create an iPad that only consists of a voice, who he can love and cherish without being afraid that it'll run away from him or get mad. This voice is created specifically to accept the main character's personality.
However, as time goes on, this voice- once just a robot, without any feeling or self-thought whatsoever- starts to become more human-like. It starts to understand what the main character is saying, starts to feel emotions for the main character and other situations, and begins to wish that it had a body and a brain of its own so that it could truly be with the main character. The main character is shocked, though excited, by this turn of events and begins to research ways to bring his non-animate lover to life. His research spans over a couple of years before he proposes his ideas to his brother, in which they're shot down but are secretly looked into over the next few months.
On the main character's birthday, his brother takes the now human voice to the party as his 'date', and introduces the voice to the character. The voice now does not remember anything that has gone on, but still holds the same personality. The main character starts to fall for this new being (preferably male) the same night he meets him, but feels guilty for possibly betraying his electronic lover. He tells the human that he can't be with him, and that he has someone else. He breaks the robot's heart and the robot accepts the refusal, turning and leaving. That same night, the main character realizes that his iPad has broken, and he receives a voice message that was given earlier that day before the party.
Then it's a game of cat and mouse as the main character tries to woo his lover once again, with desperation in his heart and almost a frantic need that has doubled since before, and the computer-now-human is scared about whether or not he should accept his past lover's heart or push him away, his antics now beyond loving and getting a little creepy.
Yeah, I got this idea from a movie and thought it would be interesting.
