Twin pairs of jade eyes surveyed the rolling hills capped with towering deciduous trees. Gazes meeting, the pair started off into the forest, matching tabby pelts brushing as the sisters trotted beneath the leafy canopy. Birdsong floated down to their swiveling ears as they hunted for something to fill their empty bellies. Spying a mouse, the older sibling, Autumnlight, flicked her sister, Twilightecho, on the shoulder with her tail, for silence, and began to stalk the small creature. Pouncing, the mouse died before it knew it was in danger. Autumnlight turned to see her sister returning with a squirrel clamped firmly in her jaws. They hadn't eaten this well in weeks, usually sharing a rabbit between the two of them, and it showed in their lean frames.
With their bellies finally full, they made a nest in a hollow beneath the roots of a tree, the scent of fox long cold and stale. Sated, they fell into a light sleep with intentions to stay and regain their strength before moving on in their quest to find a home.
