Wren looked very surprised. "Yes, there is! Your lord Rylan is dying! He got injured and it is infected!"

There was a moment of silence, and then slow, heavy footsteps over to the door. It cracked open, revealing a single eye. "Lord Rylan, you say?"

She breathed out, gathering her nerve. "Yes, sir. He.. we were attacked, at the palace. Only he was injured, stabbed, and it was c-cauterized but... we think it's infected. Please, sir, can you help us?"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

The door opened an inch farther and the man peered past her, his eyes briefly taking in the guard before roaming past him. "Well, where is he?"

The girl deter mouth determinedly. "I'm sorry, sir. He was too ill to travel. We need you to come with us back to the palace."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

The man snorted. "Sorry, but I don't work outside my house. Either bring him, or find some other healer."

Wren felt shock deep in her belly. "But.. you're the only one around! If you don't help him, no one will! He'll die!"

"Then you better scurry back to the castle and find a way to move him," he said, his voice void of sympathy.

Wren set her mouth and pushed against the door with all her strength. "No! You will come back with us to help him!"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"Stay out of my house, damn it!" he shouted. He threw his weight against the door, the small portion of his face that was visible twisted in rage.

Wren grimaced, sucking in a breath, and braced all her strength against the door. "Let us in! If you don't help the king, we can charge you with murdering the king! You'd be helping him die!"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

The man grumbled under his breath, then said, "You don't have the authority to do that, girl."

"There are people that do! I... I'll do anything. Just, please help him!"

From behind her, Aldric spoke up. "Believe me, sir, I have influence among the nobles. If Lord Dayne dies, rest assured you will be convicted of treason."

Wren shot Aldric an appreciative look. She turned back to the door. "Please sir... I love him."

Aldric's eyebrows rose at that, but he didn't speak. The man behind the door paused, watching Wren curiously. "You're not a noble, are you?" he said.

She drew herself up. "Technically," she said, "I am. I am the daughter of the late merchant Elias Blackthorn, and his heir."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

The man's eyes turned curious. "And you believe yourself worthy of the Lord Dayne?"

The girl looked down at her shoes. Had he really meant that he loved her? Or had it just been in jest? She looked back up at the healer. "He does love me. I know he does."

The man snorted and shook his head. "Aside from not being charged with treason, what do I have to gain if I come with you?"
