Wren nodded swiftly and grabbed a chair from the next room. She rushed to get it back and set it by Rylan's bed. She looked worriedly at his face, her eyes wide in fear that she would lose him.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

The man sat down and began to dig through his satchel. "What happened?" he asked as he laid out an assortment of herbs on the blanket. Then he pulled back the covers to inspect the wound.

Wren looked at Rylan's face. "He was stabbed- the castle was attacked, and they attempted to kill him."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

He nodded. "It's infected. I can make something to put on the wound, and a brew to give him once he wakes." He paused and glanced at the others in the room--three guards, including Aldric, and the nurse. "But I request solitude."

Wren looked blankly at him. She hadn't expected to be kicked out. "But..." She sighed to herself and touched Rylan's hot, feverish hand. "Call me as soon as he wakes up."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

The man grunted. "I didn't mean you," he said. He gestured around the room. "Them. I trust you won't share what happens in here with anyone."

Wren felt foolish, and her face burned accordingly. She nodded. "No, I won't."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

He nodded. "Good." He gave the others sharp looks and as one they moved toward the door. Aldric was the last one to exit, and he gave Wren a warning look before closing the door behind him.

Wren met Aldric's eyes and have a tiny nod before looking back at Rylan. "What are you going to do?" she asked the healer.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

He gave her a faint smile. "Magic," he said. "I'm Dessius, by the way. Dessius the Healer."

Wren looked blankly at him. "Magic? But I thought... isn't it just a myth?"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Dessius snorted. "A myth. Right." He took a mortar out of his bag and started putting different herbs into it. "You won't believe that much longer."

She frowned at him but pulled up a chair on the other side of Rylan's bed, feeling his hot forehead.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Once the leaves were crushed, Dessius added a few drops of some strong-smelling voice. Then he scraped the concoction into a flask. With one hand covering the opening, he closed his eyes and started muttering under his breath. A faint blue glow filled the flask before vanishing, as if sucked in by the leaves.

Wren watched in amazement, the blue glow catching the brown of her eyes before it was gone. She looked at Dessius and wondered what his payment would be.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

When it was complete, Dessius removed his hand and then dug the mixture out with his fingers. After exposing Rylan's wound, he began to rub it onto his skin. "This will remove the infection and hopefully make it heal faster," he told Wren. "But you'll have to keep an eye on him."

She looked at him, then at his hand, covering the wound. "Will he ever completely heal?"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"He'll most likely have a scar," Dessius said. "But he should function as well as ever once he's healed."

Wren nodded. "Good," she said quietly. "Is that it then?"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"For now," Dessius said. "I will make a brew for you to give him every morning for a few days."
