He chuckled lightly. "Exactly, glad we're on the same page," he said, giving her a crooked smile. "Perhaps you could teach some of your white folk how to be civilized around people like myself."
Annaliese nodded, "I'm practically nothing. I have no wealth or power to make me of any value to society." She frowned and picked at the material of her dress.
Zach interlocked his fingers and laid on top of them, studying her. "Mm...it guess we're in the same boat, ma'am, you and I are absolutely of no use to society, except for reproducing," he mused, his dark humor flickering through his cheerful exterior.

Annaliese cleared her throat and looked away, seeming uncomfortable, "I don't know about that. Most men wouldn't want to marry me anyways, so.." She shrugged.
He chuckled, leaning back against the wall again. "Ah, don't worry about it, ma'am. I'm sure you'll meet somebody who's right for you," he cheerfully replied, putting his hands behind his head, shifting a bit to get comfortable.
"Ma'am, even if I found someone who I adored, I doubt she would say yes to me -not a lot of women like a wandering man such as myself. She'd probably nag me constantly about settling down finally," he said wistfully, giving her a small smile.
He gave her a kind smile. "That's kind of you ma'am, though I highly doubt anyone would be fine with a husband who doesn't have a strong job that gets in constant paychecks. We hobos wander around from place to place, we don't have a place to call our home."

She leaned her head back against the wall, "You and I have the opposite problem. Most men don't want a woman who works and doesn't listen to every word they say."
"Quite, they don't want anything to change," he agreed, "though soon...soon black people might be able to be integrated into society...I'm just hoping it'll be in my lifetime."
"Ah, so you were listening to me," Zach teased, before he grew somber. "Yes, they are, ma'am, though that doesn't mean that there's no more prejudice."

Annaliese's gaze settled on him and she pursed her lips. They may have been used to it, but that didn't make it right. She rolled to her side and laid her head on the satchel, using it as a makeshift pillow.
