"Well, at least it will be an adventure," he said with a chuckle.

Valerie stared at him. "You're a bit mad you know that right?"

Burn shrugged. "It's been said before." He took the silver coin out of his pocket and handed it to her. "By the way, I thought you should keep this safe until we find him."

Valerie flipped the coin in her fingers. "Why? What is it?"

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"Saint Jude is the patron saint of lost causes," Burn said. "It was important to him."

Valerie looked at him, looked at the coin, and then tucked it in her pocket. Okay then. "Are we almost there?" She wanted to be, but she was also scared.

"No. It will be another couple of hours. Might as well get comfortable." Burn glanced out the window. The sun was starting to set, which meant they'd be there in the middle of the night. Perfect.

Valerie did as she was told and soon fell asleep, exhausted from the emotional turmoil of the past week.

Roughly three hours later, Burn shook her awake. "We're here," he said softly. "Time to wake up."

Valerie pulled herself up right and looked at Burn. "What do we do next?"

"We'll have to rent a car to drive most of the way there, but then we'll have to approach on foot so we're not detected."

Valerie gave him a withering look. "They really didn't need to put this place in the middles of freaking nowhere."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"Actually they did," Burn said. "Secret military bases tend to be in the middle of nowhere." He cleaned his throat as he stood up. "Also, based on that look, you'll be pleased to know that it's snowing."

Valerie groaned. "I hope you're right because this better be worth it."

Burn led the way off the bus and then took them to the car rental place. He paid with a credit card and then they were on their way to Noxton, Oregon. "We're going to park two miles outside of the town," he said. "Maybe the snow will have stopped by then."

Valerie looked at her sneakers then back up at him. "If we have to trudge through snow.... These might not work out so well..."

"What's your size?" he asked, glancing over at her feet.

"Eight and a half." She mumbled.

Burn took one hand off the wheel and held it out to the side. He spoke a word in an archaic language and a pair of black boots appeared in her lap. "There. Put those on."

Valerie's grinned as she put on the boots. "Okay now that was cool!!
