Aron watched her go, a pained look in his eyes. "You're not going to go after her?" Burn asked.

"It's better this way," Aron said. "She'll be safe now." He glanced at Burn, who was regarding him curiously. "I know what you're thinking. Why am I in a Legion uniform? Why am I not leaving with you?" He looked down at the floor and took a deep breath. "Martin's alive, Burn. He's here."

Burn's face remained impassive, but he gave a small nod. "I understand. I just hope you understand the consequences of your decision. You will break that girl's heart."

"She'll get over it," he said quietly.

"Will you?"

Aron didn't answer that. Instead, he said, "You should leave now. Go find her and get her home safely."

Valerie didn't stop. She was never going to stop. She was going to run until the broken, shattered thing inside her chest gave up and her body fell on the ground and rotted away with the changing seasons. Roadkill, that's what everyone would think, poor dog.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Burn held his gaze for a few long seconds. Aron's face was still hard, but there was something pleading in his green eyes. Finally, the warlock nodded. "I'll watch out for her. Just be sure you're making the right choice. There won't be any changing your mind."

"I know." Aron dragged a hand through his black hair. "Goodbye, Burn."

Burn gave a small nod and then turned, leaving Aron standing alone in the hallway. He looked lost for a few seconds before he pulled himself together and went about what he'd been doing before Burn and Valerie had shown up.

Valerie didn't stop until her legs gave out under her and she dropped to the ground somewhere in the middle of a forest. No one would find her here. And that was ok.

"Did you think you could hide here forever?" Burn stepped out of the darkness and raised his eyebrows at her. A small ball of flame hovered over his palm, casting semi-creepy shadows on his face.

"I was hoping that I could. I'm staying here. Go away." Somehow she didn't sound petulant. Just bored and broken and tired.

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"You're coming back to New York with me," Burn said. "I'm not leaving you out here to starve or freeze or whatever you were planning."

Valerie snarled, she was surprised that her human vocal chords could make that sound. "I have nothing to go back to."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

Burn stepped over toward her. "You can't give up on life. There's more to be had. You just have to look for it."

Valerie's eyes burned. "Leve me alone Burn, I'll go back to New York but I'll go on my terms."

[ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟғʀᴏsᴛ]

"I'm not leaving this alone," Burn said calmly. "I've lived for a long time. I really have nothing better to do."

Valerie rolled her eyes. "I can go back to Isaiah as a human. I can build a life. It'll take time and I'll be homeless, but that's nothing I'm not used to. I don't want your pity old man."

Burn raised an eyebrow. "It's not pity, young lady," he said. "I am simply doing a friend a favor." He debated his next words, not sure how much he could give away without breaking his promise. "He never wanted to break your heart, you know."

Felicity snorted. "Somehow, I don't believe you. I'm not kidding, leave me alone, I'll deal with this the best way I know how."

Burn smiled sadly. "It's amusing that you think I'm giving you a choice here."

"I don't really care if you're giving me a choice or not. I'm going to chose anyway."

Burn made a face. "I'm not sure that's how it works, love."

Valerie snarled again. "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!"

Burn scoffed and stepped forward. He grabbed her arm and hauled her to her feet. "We're going," he said.

Valerie changed and twisted to Burn, effectively biting his thigh. She bit down as hard as she could, growling and snarling.
