Guess Then...I Kinda Got Arrested

"What're you doing down there?"
Kendrick silently cursed the gods then looked up at the cop. "Just having breakfast."
"Do you live here?"
He cursed his stupid ability and the fact that it wouldn't allow him to lie. Yes or no questions were impossible to cheat. "Yes."
"I'm going to have to take you in."
It wasn't the full truth, he could see that, really the officer was just bored and on any other day he wouldn't have cared. Kendrick went willingly.

Fifteen minutes later, Astrid was at the station and locked in one of their temporary holding cells. They had tried to figure out who she was, but she wouldn't tell them her name, so they couldn't call her foster father. The last thing she wanted was him coming down here to bail her out. They'd have to do the leg work to determine her identity. Teach them to arrest her.

They threw Kendrick in one of the minor holding cells, right next to someone else he didn't bother to look at. He'd be here a night or two at the longest, not enough to care about who got to be bailed out by family.

Astrid hardly glanced up when they put someone else into the cell beside hers. The officer locked the cell and then paused in front of her. "Are you sure you don't want to tell us your name, kid?" he said. She didn't answer.

The answer to the man's question blurred around his eyes. Kendrick glanced over, the truth only blurred like that for one person he had ever met so far. "Hey you again."

Astrid's automatic reaction was to tell whoever was talking to her to piss off, but then she recognized the voice. She glanced over, her eyes going wide. "Wow, what are you in for?" she asked.

Kendrick shrugged. "I live under a bridge."

Astrid snorted. "Lamest response I've ever heard."

Kendrick shrugged. It was probably the lamest thing he had ever heard at the prison too but he was okay with that.

Astrid shook her head slightly. "Well, I'm in for drug possession. Much cooler."

Kendrick cocked an eyebrow at her. He refused to say anything, but she wasn't completely honest. She was tired. So tired of her life. He knew in the way she lied.

Astrid glared at him. "What? You're looking at me like I'm some stray dog you found." She tried to look threatening, but with her messy hair and shadowed eyes, she just looked worn.

Kendrick shook his head. "You are different. That's all."

Astrid snorted. "Whatever you say, bridge-dweller."

Kendrick looked down at his hands folded neatly over his knees. He wondered how long the cops would keep him this time. He ahd no idea why they kept expecting someone to come get him.

Astrid leaned her head back against the cold wall and closed her eyes. "Maybe they should just lock me up for good and be done with it," she muttered.

He knew that the cops wanted to. He knew that they were sick of arresting both of them. But he didn't say anything about that. "Do you like ice cream?"

Astrid opened her eyes and stared at him. "Excuse me?"

Yes. Chocolate chip cookie dough. Was what flashed across his vision. People couldn't help thinking the truth, whether or not they knew it. "I'm just making small talk."

"About ice cream?" Astrid said skeptically. "I'd rather not talk about food right now."
