"A penny?" Eros repeated, just as stunned. "Well... that I suppose I can do." He reached into his pocket and dug out the spare coins he had there. A few dimes, a quarter, and single penny, which he handed over.

The woman smirked. "Alright, you can take him." She stepped away so they could leave, even though the boy was still naked.

"Where are his clothes?" Eros asked, pulling the boy, still wrapped in his jacket, closer to him.

"I don't have any for him." She twirled her hair around on a finger. "I don't have any for any of them."

"They don't have clothes?" Eros said, aghast. This woman wasn't fit to run an orphanage! "Come on, Cody," he said, placing a hand on his son's shoulder. "Let's get out of here." And never look back.

He looked up at the stranger, blinking with large eyes before he hesitantly nodded.

Eros led him down the stairs and out the front door, lifting the little boy easily into the his arms when they got outside, so he wouldn't have to walk on the fresh snow with his bare feet. He carried him to his car and buckled him into the backseat. "It's gonna be okay, kid," he said.

The boy looked down at the seatbelt, quivering quietly.

"First stop, I'm going to get you some clothes," Eros told him as he got into the driver's seat. "How does that sound?" He glanced into the rearview mirror at the boy's face. Blue lips, red cheeks, bloodshot eyes. He looked like hell.

The boy sniffled and rubbed at his eye with a little fist, sniffling again. He nodded.

Eros started the car and drove away from the orphanage, glad to be rid of that place. He was sure the boy was glad, too. He pulled up in front of a store and looked over his shoulder at Cody. "You wait here, okay? I'll only be a few minutes." Naked as he was, the boy couldn't accompany him inside.

Eros got out of the car and walked into the store. He was in a hurry, so of course everything took twice as long as it shoulder have. Finding clothes that looked to be Cody's size, getting to the front of the store, checking out.

Of course, the guy forgot to lock the car because he was an idiot and wasn't meant to be a father of a young child.

So as the boy sat there, shivering in the cold car as the snow started to frost over the windows and doors, the driver's side window smashed open with a crash and an older man entered the car in a hurry, slamming the door closed and hot wiring the car on before pulling out of the parking space.

The little boy was too scared to move or talk, staring at the scary man.

When Eros returned to find his car gone, her swore under his breath. Whoever dared steal his car--and his son--was going to pay. Luckily, the first thing he'd done was slip a magical homing device in the pocket of the coat Cody was wearing. He hadn't wanted to lose the kid, no matter what. With the other half of the magical pair of object, he started out on foot after the car thief.

The thief didn't seem to notice the presence of the kid in the car until he looked through the rearview mirror to check if anyone was following him.

"Ah, sh!t..." He groaned, rubbing his face with one hand while focusing on the road. "All I wanted was a car, not a kid. What's your name, kid?"

The boy stayed silent, shivering.

"Cold?"

The boy nodded and the thief at least had the decency to turn the heat on.
