Eros walked to his own room. After changing into his pajamas--which was really just a pair of cotton pants--he spent a few minutes pacing his room instead of getting into bed.

Eventually, Eros settled down, but he was still fretting about the boy. How badly was he going to screw this up before he figure it out? Would he ever figure it out? He sighed and closed his eyes, finally drifting off to sleep an hour later.

The next morning, the boy woke up completely disoriented and freaking out, his arms wrapped around his legs as he sat in the corner of the room on the bed, shaking and looking around himself.

Eros rose early, just like he always did. At first, he didn't even remember that he'd brought home a son yesterday. He went about his normal routine--showing, getting dressed, going down to breakfast--without a thought for the boy. He was halfway through his cereal when it hit him. "Oh, sh*t," he said. He set the bowl down with a clang and ran down the hallway to Cody's room.

Cody sat in the corner of the room, his head covered with a blanket and shaking. He wanted to go home... Where his real mommy and daddy were.

Eros knocked lightly on the door and then entered, figuring the boy wouldn't know to let him in. He'd probably never been shown common courtesy before. "How did you sleep?" he asked, giving him a tight smile.

Eros stared for a second, unsure of what to do. Eventually he walked over and sat down on at the foot of the bed. "Hey... it's okay..." he said.

The boy instantly flinched away. She would do this. Every time. She'd act nice and then... He flinched.

Eros reached out to touch him, but withdrew his hand before he did. "I'm not going to hurt you," he said. "I promise. I don't know what they did to you in that place, but... you're safe now." How was he going to get this kid to trust him, after what he'd been through?

The child continued to tremble, whimpering though he felt at least a smidgen better.

"Good boy," Eros said, trying to sound upbeat and friendly. "Let's go down to the kitchen, then."

the boy squirmed off the bed and walked to the door, sheet still covering him. He felt safe under it. No one could see him.
