The male kissed his shoulder. "Shasta, maybe it's... maybe it's time you settled down and found someone you can deal with being with for an extended amount of time."

He lifted his head and looked at him with a blotchy red face. "Wh-What do you mean?"

"Well... Like a boyfriend."

Donato took a deep breath and twisted the doorknob, and then stepped out into the hallway.

Donato heard the voices from down the hallway, but he didn't catch any of the words except for 'Shasta' and 'boyfriend.' Who was Shasta talking to? He took a few steps forward and paused to listen.

Shasta nibbled on his lower lip. "But... I already... like someone..."

The male stiffened. "Who?"

"Someone... here..."

"Do they like you in return?"

"Well..."

"Shasta, I know that look. Don't lie to me."

A sigh. "No, they don't. They think I'm a w****."

The male clenched his teeth. "The b*stard. Where is he."

Donato bit his lip. Shasta wasn't talking about HIM, was he? No, impossible. Even if he had called him a wh*re on multiple occasions.

"That's not right, Shas. You're supposed to be loved. You're a vulnerable boy who needs to be protected. Not hurt all the time."

Donato crept closer, but not too close, just to be able to hear better. This was a very interesting conversation.

Shasta sighed. "No you don't."

"And why not? Because you're waiting for Donato to pull his head out of his a**? He's not going to, Shas! He's an idiot!"

Donato recoiled like he'd been snapped. If Ash was right, it WAS him Shasta was talking about. He wasn't sure whether or not to be happy about that, or to cry. He didn't want Shasta to like him. But... at the same time... he did.

The called male turned.

"Don't get near Donato. He's a moron. He'll end up hurting you even more."

When Donato heard that Shasta was coming to bed, he scrambled down the hallway and slipped back inside his room. He swung the door shut and listened with his ear pressed against the wood, holding his breath as he waited.

Shasta entered his room and slowly closed the door, sighing softly as he leaned against it with his head bowed. His shoulders started to shake and his breathing came out ragged as tears streamed down his face. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, inhaling a shaky breath to calm himself down.

"Stupid!" Donato said to himself, slamming his open hand against his door. "Stupid, stupid, stupid." He was an idiot for being so mean to Shasta, and for not being mean enough. He had to push him away! But why did he feel so awful doing it?

Shasta slowly slid down to the floor, continuing to cry into his knees and wrapping his arms around his legs.

Donato pressed his forehead against the door and closed his eyes tightly. To go or not to go... that was the question. He could see it now if he tried to go an apologize. Shasta would spit in his face and slam the door. The thought pained him too much to even consider. But he was considering it, and it was torturing him. With shaking hands, he opened the door again and stepped out into the hallway.

Shasta stood and walked over to his bed, plopping down and burying his face in his pillow.

Donato took excruciatingly slow steps down the hallway toward Shasta's room. When he reached the door, he took about five minutes to work up the courage to knock.
