Tama smiled, stepping forward so she was almost pressed against the bars of his cell. She didn't care that there might be stains left on her silk robe; Tama just needed to be as close to him as possible, "I'll be here, Jack, I promise," she whispered to him, giving his hand a light squeeze.
The next night, Tama was anxious. She had everything he requested packed and ready, so she was just waiting to sneak down to the dungeons.
The princess was wary of getting cornered by someone again. The last time, she couldn't explain what happened. It was like some other force extended from her. Almost like...sorcery.
Jack was very close to being through. His tunnel extended from the dungeon and underneath the courtyard of the castle to the sparse wood beyond. Once he was out, he could wait for Tama up a tree and then escape with her from there. He continued to dig and finally broke through into the wood. He nodded curtly, then covered his hole with a flat stone and crawled back through the tunnel to his cell. He then covered this end of the tunnel with the stones he had moved aside to make it and sat on top. All the guards were asleep and the one Tama had hit with stones was in the infirmary with a concussion.
"Thank you," he said. He took the items. "Now, quickly, you have to leave before I get out so you won't be caught down here." He put on the cape and strung the bag across his chest underneath.
"I'm going to leave now, while the guards are asleep, I promise. You meet me in the woods near where my tunnel ends. I've stashed some gold for our journey. I will keep you safe when you get there, but you must be careful until then," he murmured, kissing his hand then touching her cheek. "I love you."
"I love you too," Tama whispered back, touching his hand briefly before pulling away from the bars. She would make it out of the castle. She didn't know where they would go or what would happen, but the princess didn't care.
"Now go. Quickly," he murmured, pulling away the stones covering the tunnel entrance. He slipped down into it and then covered it again. Hopefully this should hide his trail from them for a while.
Tama turned and fled from the dungeon, her slippers making little noise on the stone floor. She had her young maid, Hesse, prepare her a bag for the journey. The twelve year old did whatever Tama instructed, but since the princess was leaving, Hesse was told to find her older brother, Nex, once Tama had gone. He could give her a job.
Jack traveled through his tunnel, his back bent over from the narrowness and small depth of it. He finally reached the end and carefully removed the stones from above him. Using his arms and abdomen, he pulled himself up. Once there, he ran into the forest as quickly and quietly as possible.
Leaving the castle was strange for her. It was all Tama knew. She grew up there; it was her home. But home was starting to feel more like prison and she knew that leaving was her only option for freedom. With her bag in hand, she gave Hesse a farewell kiss on the forehead before silently fleeing down the corridor. There was a back entrance that she could use without being spotted.
Once Jack was a good half mile into the woods, he stopped an leaned against a tree. He looked up at it then decided to wait there for Tama. He knew he would be safe there from wild animals. He started climbing until he was three fourths of the way up and balanced precariously on a branch. He sat there, straddling it, and are a small bit of bread.
