Her entire demeanor had changed. She was now the stranger he had met that first day, cold and calculating though still having a small amount of warmth in her eyes. "No, I haven't. That means you should trust me. I don't like you, but I might." She shrugged. "I'm merely concerned for an ally. Nothing more."
He watched her then lay back on his side, his back to her. He hated when he was wrong but she was very clingy even if she claimed it was concern for an ally.
"Fine, then. I shall go." She started to pack the deer. She hoped to all the gods and goddesses he didn't notice the tears in her eyes or her throat. "Would you like me to leave some meat left for you?"
She just gave a short nod, making sure the dragon was secure, the packs tied down hard enough. "I'll be back in this cave in a fortnight(*). If you don't wish to see me, then you should go."
Jacob had left the place where Elena had left him, traveling by himself and fighting off the occasional people his previous captors had sent after him.
It was one month later and Elena had changed. She wore skin-tight black leather pants, a loose black tank-top and a black leather jacket, black boots laced up to her knees in dark red cords. Her hair was bound tightly on the crown of her head and she moved with a fluid grace of a dancer.
And she was annoyed, angry, and starving. She plopped down in front of a fire, warmed her hands with the flame before cooking her dinner. Aqua rested beside her, thousands of pounds larger than he had been a month later, his entire body stretched, longer, leaner. Here you go. Have some. She passed over some meat and glanced up at the sound of a branch cracking.
Jacob had returned to get his quiver of arrows which he had forgotten at the campsite. He glanced at Elena and then went into the cave, grabbing his quiver, and walking back out of the cave.
