He chuckled, gesturing for her to follow him. "Come on now ma'am, Tante Emma'll be waitin' for us." As he got to the door, he opened it and called in, "Tante Emma? You in here?"
"Zach? Oh my darlin', how are you?" A woman walked out, her yellow eyes twinkling. She was about fifty, her white hair tied up in a tight bun, wisps of her hair fluttering in the wind. A pair of pink glasses perched on her nose, looking like they would fall down at anytime. She wore a simple white blouse tucked into a tan skirt. She looked as lanky and as skinny as Zach, clearly it ran in the family. Her eyes flickered to Annaliese and her eyes hardened. "Who's this?" She asked, a bit of fear entering into her voice. She took a step back towards the doorway, her chest rising and falling.
"Tante Emma, please, this is Annaliese. She's a...friend of mine," he said, gesturing to her.
She gave a curt nod to Annaliese, looking strained. "It's nice to meet you, Ms. Annaliese, I do hope Zach wasn't too much of a bother," she said, giving her a small smile.
Tante Emma's smile softened, seeming to suddenly change her opinion of this girl. "Is that so?" She mused quietly, slowly making her way towards Annaliese. As she stepped out into the fading sunlight, she stuck her hand out to the white woman. "Well then...if Zach believes that you're alright, then...welcome, Ms. Annaliese. I'm Tante Emma, feel free to make yourself at home."
Annaliese dropped her bag and shook Tante Emma's hand, "Thank you very much! I promise I won't be a bother to you and I will help out with whatever you need!"
The smile turned more genuine as Annaliese spoke, her shoulders relaxing. "I doubt you'll be more trouble than Zach here," she said, chuckling lightly. Tante Emma bent down and grabbed the woman's bag, gesturing for her to follow her into the house. "I hadn't expected another guest to stop by, so you'll have to make do with a spare room, I hope that's fine," she said, speaking over her shoulder as she propped the door open for the two.
Zach turned to Annaliese and gave her a crooked grin. "After you ma'am," he said, giving her a mock bow.
Tante Emma led the two into the house. It was a small place, with a ton of windows letting in bright sunlight. The rooms were open, no doors closing them off, and despite the simple look, it seemed quite homey and welcome. She slowly made her way to the stairway and gestured to Annaliese to head up, standing off to the side. "Up there, first room on the left," she said.
Tante Emma gave her a small smile, as she handed her her bag. "Of course, Zach will show you to your room," she said, rubbing her hands on her apron, before she disappeared into the kitchen. He appeared beside her and flicked his fingers for her to follow him.
He gave her a chuckle, turning his head to the side to glance down at her. "Nah, Tante Emma wouldn't do that, she's too nice. 'Sides, she couldn't've turned you down, that'd be too cruel." As he got to the top of the steps, he rapped his knuckles against a closed door, nodding to her. "Here's your room, it shouldn't be too messy..."
Zach opened the door, stepping to the side so she could get in. It was a simple room, with only a small wooden desk and chair and a small bed in the corner. It looked fine enough to live in, it was clear that no one had really lived in this room, what with all the dust covering the corners of the room.
He leaned against the wall, giving her a crooked smile. "Of course, of course. I'll be in the next room over. Holler if you need me," he said, standing up straighter, before giving her a small nod, and walking off to his room.
Zach rapped his knuckles against Annaliese's door, leaning his ear closer to the door. "Ms. Annaliese? Tante Emma has already made breakfast. She's been waitin' for us."
The sound took her from her dreams and she sat up in alarm, looking around. She took a deep breath and scooted out of bed. Shuffling to the door, Annaliese peeked out at him, "I'll be out soon.."
