The wind howled, blowing bits and pieces of houses across the street. Everything was abandoned by now- it all started a few months prior. A few people started getting sick and it spread rapidly, the death toll rising. But then..people came back, only they weren't people anymore. It took massive amounts of gunfire to subdue them and even the police forces couldn't battle this new undead army. Sickness spread through bites, scratches and like. Pretty soon, the world had been turned upside down.
Katherine Middleston gripped a baseball bat in one hand and a large kitchen knife in the other. Her brown hair was tied up in a sleek ponytail and her face was spotted with dirt and dried blood. She peered out from the boarded up window, dark eyes watching for the halting movement of the undead.
"We have to move soon," She whispered, turning her head to look at the small group of survivors.
The youngest girl in the group, Allie, crouched next to Adam. Her short, brown hair rustled slightly in the wind and she shivered- it was a bit chilly. Adam gazed down at her with deep blue eyes which had a few pieces of blonde hair swept haphazardly over them. "Agreed," said a girl who brought up the rear of the group. "Katherine, where are we going to go?"
Katherine frowned, tapping her fingers against the bat, "It has to be somewhere we can block off, so no biters get in," she mused, "Like a house or store. More importantly, we need food."
"Why can't we stay here?" William, called Will more often, piped up.
The girl, called Caroline or Carrie, smiled kindly at Will though it held a sense of sadness. "I wish we could just stay in one place, but we are too exposed here and the biters will find us if we stay in once place too long." Privately, Allie shared Will's thoughts but she stayed quiet as usual.
Allie gave a frown and Carrie nodded in agreement. Adam looked around the small building and then crawled, hunched over, to another window. He noticed an old cafe which appeared to be empty from the outside. It was just across the street and so it was easily accessible. "Katherine, do you see that cafe over there? There's bound to be food in there."
Adam gazed at her then back at the cafe. "I can cover you guys while you get over there," he offered with a small smile, knowing the enormous risk that came with the job.
Carrie nodded and grabbed her gun, fastening her large knife to her belt and then helping Allie with her small knife. Allie smiled trustingly and walked up to Will, standing beside him. Carrie stayed where she was at the back of the group. Adam watched everybody like a fretful shepherd.
Allie smiled back at Will, showing slightly crooked but very white teeth. She followed after Katherine and Caroline herded everybody. Adam followed shortly after to ward off the biters.
There were a few straggling biters which Adam watched carefully. They didn't seem very interested in them yet so Adam urged everybody outside after Will and Allie. Allie quickly made it all the way across the street, dragging Will with her.
Will stumbled to keep up, at that awkward stage in his life. His legs were rather long and he wasn't exactly graceful. He gripped the baseball bat tightly, his face pale.
Katherine kept an eye out as well, keeping behind Caroline with her pistol ready.
Allie still stuck with Will, a knife gripped in one of her hands. She kept a watchful eye on the biters, almost as watchful as Adam's eye. Soon enough, they were at the cafe. Caroline stood behind everybody, putting herself between them, the biters and Adam. Adam soon was right in front of Caroline who was not happy about him volunteering first to guard their family; she stood next to him and watched the disinterested biters.
Allie made him open the door a bit more so she could see. "Looks empty," she whispered, making sure the biters wouldn't get interested in her or the group. Allie slipped inside, quite talented at reconnaissance, and looked around a bit more. It was actually quite unchanged- except for a bit of blood on the floor. She didn't hear anything. "It's okay to come inside."
