Shifters, or therianthropes, have the ability to change their form into an animal. Unlike werewolves or werecats, they aren't forced to change according to the moon and can choose which animal to change into. When they're young, they can shift into whatever animal they want, as often as they want. However, as they grow older, they eventually settle on a form that they will use the rest of their life. Settled forms can often be predicted by a shifter's personality, forms of other family members, and the shape the young shifter seems to shift into most often by choice. Shape shifters are sensative to steel, although it doesn't burn them like silver does to werewolves. However, long exposure to steel will eventually kill a shifter. Shifters, similar to werewolves and werecats, usually live for about a hundred years.
